There can be many reasons why you might get a mosquito bite swelling, however, it is usually an allergic
reaction. If you move to somewhere new, you will often get some mosquito bite swellings, but after a few
months or longer mosquito bite swelling will not occur. Sometimes it takes a lot longer for your body to build
up a tolerance. Eighteen months, if you move to another country.
Mosquito Bite Swelling
Mosquito bites itch because when a female mosquito bites you, she squirts saliva containing
proteins and enzymes into the wound. This saliva has a number of purposes that we know of: it anaesthetizes the
vicinity of the bite and makes your blood flow more freely (anti-coagulant). It may also contain a mild
antiseptic.
However, these proteins and enzymes are eventually detected by your body’s immune system (usually
within 24 hours) and your body releases antibodies and histamines in an effort to defend itself from the antigens
that the mosquito has injected into the lesion. These histamines are the real cause of the irritation from mosquito
bites.
This is where the hassle starts. Most individuals suffer from a little itching and a small hard
bump. This mosquito bite swelling is not what is meant by an allergic reaction, although it is actually an allergic
reaction causing the mosquito bite swelling. True allergic reactions are much worse and frequently necessitate
professional treatment. You will know if you are allergic.
Some individuals go on to become tolerant to mosquito saliva and hardly show any mosquito bite
swelling at all. In my experience, this takes 18-24 months of being bitten day after day. It is not worth letting
mosquitoes bite you in order to reach this condition.
Mosquito Bite Pictures
There are plenty of mosquito bite pictures about, especially on the Internet. Many of them are
royalty free too. You can obviously start by looking at our mosquito bite pictures on this website, although they
are not something that we actively promote or sell.
Our mosquito bite pictures show several female mosquitoes enjoying what is called a 'blood meal'. A female must
have blood to produce her eggs, which is why it is only female mosquitoes that bite. (The male mosquito sips nectar
from flowers).
The other mosquito bite pictures on our website show the sufferer's reaction to having been bitten. Most people
get a mosquito bite swelling and some have a mosquito bite allergy, which is an extreme reaction. You can clearly
see the blotchy marks which often form after a mosquito bite in these mosquito bite pictures.
Sometimes these blotches remain for months or longer. I personally have two that I know I have had for nearly
five years although they stopped being painful years ago. They are now more like scars, but will still bleed if
prodded.
